Mammoet has partnered with Rietveld, a specialist in fleet management and vehicle safety systems, to enhance safety measures during the movement and manoeuvering of mobile cranes
The joint project aims to integrate three distinct safety technologies to aid Mammoet's customers in adhering to stricter safety regulations. Initial testing is underway on Mammoet's new Liebherr LTM 1070-4.2 70t mobile crane.
The comprehensive safety system incorporates Rietveld's OmniVue 360° camera system, utilising a network of cameras installed on the crane's chassis to provide real-time first and third-person views of the vehicle. This setup enables the crane operator to have a complete 360-degree view, both inside and outside the cab, enhancing awareness of surrounding pedestrians and road users.
The second component of the system involves a series of sensors that detect individuals and obstacles within an adjustable safety radius around the crane. Upon detection of a potential hazard, the sensors emit an acoustic signal to alert the driver. Additionally, an LED warning panel indicates the section of the crane where the motion was detected.
The final element, known as the 'Halo,' projects a visible light boundary on the ground surrounding the crane, offering a clear visual indication of the safe zone. This feature is particularly crucial in environments where hearing protection is necessary. The boundary can be activated or deactivated manually and is programmed to deactivate automatically once a certain speed threshold is reached.
Ferdi Kivanc, project coordinator EMD at Mammoet, said, “By combining these three systems, Mammoet will improve safety, minimise accidents and damage, and give greater confidence to crane operators to create safer working environments. We see this as a comprehensive system that will not only enhance crane safety, but also operator training in the future. Initial tests are promising, and I am very proud of the results.”
Frank Kanters, account manager at Rietveld, said, “When Mammoet approached us with what it wanted to achieve, we were delighted to offer our expertise. By working with its engineers to test the integration of our collision-prevention technologies, we have created something unique in crane safety solutions. We look forward to developing the system further and progressing to eventual rollout.”
“The B7-Comfort is already an award-winning design with many unique and patented features. We’re excited to tailor and bring this innovative harness to the telecommunications industry. We put a concerted effort into maintaining comfort and mobility while at height all day, and we’re confident this harness will meet those towering user needs.”
