Safety First - Craig Bennett - FlickrThe British Safety Council (BSC) has launched its 2015 Sword of Honour award, which has been designed to recognise and celebrate exemplary management of health and safety risks by businesses around the world

Now in its 36th year, the Sword of Honour award is open to business units and sites from all countries and business sectors that have achieved the maximum five stars in BSC’s independent Five Star health and safety management audits in the period between 1 August 2014 and 31 July 2015. To be awarded a Sword of Honour, an organisation must demonstrate to an independent panel of judges that it has a proven track record and a culture of best practice for excellence in health and safety management that runs throughout the business.

Alongside the Sword of Honour, BSC also awards a Globe of Honour, now in its sixth year, which recognises companies’ excellence in environmental management. The procedure for awarding the Globe of Honour is similar to that for the Sword of Honour, with the audit being done for environmental management instead of health and safety.

Explaining the rationale behind the awards, Neal Stone, acting CEO of BSC, said, “The British Safety Council’s vision is that no one should be injured or made ill at work, but with over 2.3mn people still being senselessly killed globally every year due to work-related injury and ill health, it is clear there is still a huge task ahead to convince all business leaders everywhere that investing in good health, safety and environmental management is of great social and economic value.”

The closing date for applications is 4 September 2015 and the results will be announced on 12 October 2015. The awards will be distributed to the winning organisations on 27 November 2015 at the Drapers’ Hall in London.
