Explore how robust well integrity is essential to ensure safety and also prevent issues such as SCP (sustained casing pressure), which can subsequently lead to methane emissions to the environment
On 8 May 2024 at 2pm UAE time, Oil Review Middle East will host a Welltec webinar on ‘Eliminating methane emissions through enhanced well integrity’.
Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, with over 80 times the warming power of carbon dioxide. It remains a significant challenge for the oil and gas industry, which is estimated to account for up to a quarter of global methane emissions. Reducing methane emissions is at the top of the agenda now for oil and gas companies, as international regulations become increasingly stringent. At COP28, around 50 oil and gas companies, accounting for around 40% of total oil and gas production, signed the landmark Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC), committing to near-zero upstream methane emissions by 2030.
According to the International Energy Agency, emissions in the oil and gas sector can be reduced by over 75% by implementing tried and tested measures, typically at low cost. 30% of wells leak methane into atmosphere, but this can be eliminated through robust well integrity solutions. Innovative approaches and technologies can enhance well integrity and mitigate methane leakage.
